Train Derails near Pompton Junction
On July 11, 1960, a train heading north on the Erie Railroad track derailed on its way to Wanaque. Police reported that two youths, 9 and 11 years old, admitted that they pulled a railroad switch, which caused six locomotives to derail and plow into some parked freight cars in the yard of the Carlson Supply Company and killing both the engineer and a Jersey City fireman. Engine Co #1 responded to the scene, operating as heavy rescue.
