Pequanoc Rubber Recycling Mill Fire

On the night of February 25th, 1957, a fire started in an industrial dyer that was used during the reclamation process during a change of shifts at the Pequanoc Rubber Recycling Mill (Pequanoc Soft Rubber Company) in Butler, NJ. It was not uncommon for these type of fires to occur, but usually the people were aware and able to keep them contained. On that night, this would not be the case. Engine Co #1 provided mutual aid for nearly a week until the fire was suppressed and overhaul completed. The fire would bring about the end of the Pequanoc Rubber Company in Butler. The fire caused damages that would equal millions in today's market. The company decided it would move its location to a smaller plant located in Georgia.
